We are looking for an individual with diverse and extensive experience of working within an engineering operation, sound management skills and an appropriate electrical qualification.

Tower Bridge is a working bascule bridge, leading events venue and popular tourist attraction and along with the Monument, built to commemorate the Great Fire of London, are managed by tourism and operational teams based at Tower Bridge.

With over 700 Bridge lifts, 250 corporate and private events and circa 800,000 visitors per annum a dedicated technical team undertake the logistics of operating, maintaining and repairing electrical, mechanical and hydraulic bridge machinery. 

In addition they carry out a range of facilities management duties as well as representing the Bridge for marketing and tourism activities and providing technical cover at evening functions for which overtime is paid.

An important and high profile role undertaken by the Technical Officer is lifting the Bridge to allow river vessels access to and egress from the Upper Pool of London involving close co-operation with vessel owners, the Port of London Authority Harbour Master and Transport for London.

We operate an 8 hour shift pattern working 7 days on 3 off (averaging 40hrs per week p/a) alternating early and late shift between 07:00hrs – 19:00hrs and includes participation in the 24 hour/ 365 days a year call out roster for out of hours Bridge Lifts. Regular overtime is also required to be undertaken as part of the role and flexibility is crucial in order to fulfil and deliver our obligations to our stakeholders.

  • The Technical Officer provides direct support to the Senior Technical Officer and is responsible for managing and delivering a high level of service in the provision of all hydraulic, mechanical and electrical repairs and to effectively manage the maintenance team.

    To deliver this the team has a balance of appropriately skilled staff with individuals having ownership and responsibility in each area to undertake reactive and planned maintenance activities of operational machinery and facilities.

    An important and high profile duty carried out by these posts is raising the Bridge when required as part of our duty under the Corporation of London (Tower Bridge) Act 1885 and vessels may book these with only 24 hours’ notice.

    The Bridge houses a successful attraction and the team is responsible for a range of facilities management duties as well as ensuring the attraction is set-up accordingly for paying visitors by undertaking ‘start-up’ and ‘shut down’ routines every day. 

    They are also required to respond to reactive works as necessary in order to minimise any impact on visitors or clients.

    The post also contributes to the attraction offer through delivering engineering tours and talks during the winter to paying groups and visitors as well as on occasion participate in press and promotional activities arranged by the Marketing Team.

    Events are popular at Tower Bridge and the technical team are responsible for setting up and breaking down of function furniture as well as to be a technical presence during an event to deal with any issues that may arise. 

    In this capacity the expectations are that the team will assist the client with setting up and use of audio visual equipment, lighting, internet connectivity and any other equipment as necessary.
